I believe the best type of writing jobs from home is having your own business as a writer, also known as freelance writing. You pick up clients and write articles and other content they request of you. You will be able to write and earn money. If you’re not good at writing and don’t enjoy it, look for another job. Otherwise, if you treat it like a business and work hard, you can do very well working from home.

Get Rid of Distractions

For those that work from home in any capacity, it is very easy to get distracted. First, there are a lot more distractions. You could easily end up sleeping in when you shouldn’t. If any of your family is home, you could end up chatting or playing with them. All your ‘toys’ are at home (TV, books, video games, etc.). Second, if you’re working on your computer, you could get distracted by the internet. This often happens at regular jobs, but you have bosses that might notice making it harder to do it discreetly.

Get rid of all distractions. You aren’t being paid by the hour no matter how hard you work. You are getting paid for your work. Wake up and work like it’s a regular work day. Get dressed and ready to work. If possible, turn off the internet and keep only a word processing document open while you work. The better you can keep away distractions, the more work you’ll get done and the more money you’ll make.

Get the Right Clients

The best client is the one that gives you a lot of work, pays well, pays fast, and gives you more work again and again. Always search for this client over and over until you have enough work. They will come back again and again and you can trust them that they will pay. Also, it’s easier to keep existing clients than to find new ones. You don’t have to keep spending so much time searching and training your new client in how you do things.

Improve your Work and Raise your Price

Over time, you can raise your price, and you should. As your writing improves and demand for your work and time increases, raise your rate. You might have to drop loyal clients that refuse to pay you what you’re worth if you have other clients who will. Don’t do this until you have more than enough work, and bargain with your clients. Good clients will value you and be willing to pay you more for good work.

Finding Online Writing Jobs

If you love writing fiction, short stories, and novels, online writing jobs might not be right for you. You can make money writing novels and short stories, but you have to be a very good writer and get your work published. If you’re a successful writer, you can make it a career, but it may be a while. On the other hand, if you want to start making money now, you have to find more immediate work.

Freelance writing 20 years ago was much different from what it is now. Before, freelance writing meant writing for magazines, catalogs, trade magazines, and newspapers. You pitched articles wherever you could hoping to make a nice sum from each article. It was very hard to do, and usually these freelanced were referred to as ‘starving artists’ unless and until they became very successful in high demand.

With the internet, more and more content is in demand than ever before. All over the internet, webmasters and companies are looking for articles for their websites. There is demand for high quality content and sufficient quality. Some will even pay for poor quality, albeit very little pay. Writing web content is in high demand.

You can find online writing jobs in many places. You can write for content mills such as Textbroker, Associated Content, or Helium. These all work somewhat differently, but they will pay you either per article or for page views to your articles published. Some publish on their website and others connect you to buyers looking for content.

Writing for the web is different than for magazines. Some clients are looking for SEO content. This is content that is optimized with keywords to help with ranking in search engines. Other clients are looking for more traditional ‘excellent’ quality articles written with a natural voice. You have to work closely with clients to give them what they want.

Make a Living with Online Writing Jobs

You can make a living with online writing jobs. Start by making a website. Make a website all about you and your writing. Put up samples. As you complete articles for clients, ask if you can place links to your work to show off credibility. Look for new clients everywhere and anywhere. Look on forums and places like Craigslist. Developing relationships with clients will help you to keep clients meaning you can spend more time writing and less time searching. Be careful with clients and make sure you work out a good payment plan so that you don’t get shorted.

To make a living writing online, you have to work hard and be consistent. Over time, you will get better and better. Soon, you can start charging more pennies per work. The more money you make per word, the less you have to work to make the same amount of money. Or, you can work just as much and make more. Freelance writing is just as much as business as it is a creative outlet. It should be treated as both to reach success.

Write all the Time

Publishing a book requires good writing. Good writing comes from talent, but also practice. The more you practice writing, the better you’ll get. Carry a notebook around with you wherever you go to jot down ideas and practice writing. Spend a minimum amount of time each day writing. For example, write for at least 30 minutes a day.

What should you Write about?

Writing exercises are a great way to build your skills. However, if you want to publish a book, you need to write one. When you get writer’s block from your book, go ahead and write other things, otherwise, get busy writing your book. It’s easy to get distracted and make a project that should take a couple months take a few years. You have to be disciplined.

Edit and Polish

If you are planning on publishing a book, it has to be your best work. Not only should the grammar be top notch, but the story should flow and be compelling. Have a few friends that you trust read it through. Give them each a fresh copy and have them edit as they please. You might not take all their criticism, but getting a few extra eyes on your work can really help you tighten it up.

Get an Agent

If you plan on publishing a book in the traditional way, you should get a literary agent. Some people have been successful pitching a book directly to a publisher, but it’s rare. A literary agent will help you polish your work and find a publisher who wants to publish your book. Your agent should be confident in you and have experience with other authors.

Get Querying

When you have a book ready, you need to send out query letters to agents. Your agent will help you query book publishers. Your query letter should not be a giant excerpt from your book or detail it. It should be written in such a way that the receiver must read your book. Get them excited so they will request a manuscript.

Manuscript

When you are ready, you can start sending out manuscripts. If you plan to self-publish your book, your manuscript can be prepared and sent to your publisher.

Marketing

If you chose to self-publish, all the marketing is on you. Start a blog preparing readers and getting them interested in your work. Tell everyone you know and tell them to do the same about your book. Learn how to market your work to get out there. If you aren’t self-publishing, you can still market your book. Talk to your publisher about what you can do to get the word out.

Before you publish anything, you need to write. Without a book, you won’t have anything to publish. If you want to be a successful writer, you must write. You must write all the time. That means working on your book, practicing with writing exercises, keeping a journal, writing articles, and so on. The more time you can devote to writing each day, the better you will get at it. As you write more, the book you want to get on paper will begin to flow through your fingers.

The Traditional Route

The traditional way to publish a book is to send a query letter to an editor or a literary agent. First, write a book. You can write the thriller you’ve have brewing in your mind for years or come up with something all new. In some cases, writers pitch an idea, but as a new writer, having a full book is a great start. Be prepared to edit as necessary. Pitching a book directly to an editor is very risky. There is very little change that they will even take a look at your idea, let alone approve the book. Pitch to literary agents so that you can get someone to help you. A literary agent that believes in what you can deliver and is a good agent can help you immensely as you publish your book.

Going the traditional route will enable you to get published by a publishing company. The bigger and more established the publisher, the more they can market your book. Of course, you have to be an exceptional writer and have great work. As a good writer, that is all you should accept from yourself. If you get turned down a lot, take their constructive criticism if they are nice enough to offer it. Build your skills by taking writing classes and writing more and more. Finally, keep looking for an agent and working hard.

Self-Publishing

Self-publishing has become much more widely used and popular. You can get the books published yourself and market it yourself. Some people say that if you self-publish, traditional publishers will never publish your work. This is a risk you have to be willing to take. If you don’t think you’re good enough to get a book accepted by a good publisher but you want to publish, self-publishing might work for you. However, as a writer, you should be working hard to be a writer that is ‘good enough’. Don’t settle just because you want to see your name in print.

Other Publishing Methods

Whilethese are the main choices to get your book published, this isn’t the only way to get your words in print. Maybe you aren’t a novelist. That’s okay. Have you considered writing short stories? There are literary magazines that may publish your short stories, or you can write a collection of short stories to be published. You may be more of a nonfiction writer. You can write articles for online websites or magazines. A nonfiction novel such as a historical novel or autobiography is an option as well. Don’t limit yourself to what you think is the ‘right way’. Examine your goals and do what you must to achieve them.
