Writing Style
Everyone likes to think they have their own style. Whether it be style of clothes, hair, attitude, or anything you want to be unique about and yourself. As an aspiring author, you’re writing style is one of your most important assets.
Think about what you like to read. Not just the type of reading, you might enjoy novels, satire, poetry, but think about who writes it. Do you tend to go back to the same authors? Do you decide only to read their suspense thrillers that you love or anything they write? The reason why you return to the same writer is because you like their writing style.
Writing style is anything from the words you use, to the structure you develop. It’s the consistency you’ve established that your readers have grown to love and look for every time. Without your own writing style, your only resort would be to either write like someone else, or write generically. It’s your writing style that makes you the great writer that everyone says you are.
The only way to maintain your writing style it to not think about your writing style. I know, I brought it up, so of course you’re going to think about it. What I mean is, don’t think about your grammar and using big words. Don’t think that you want it to sound more like this or that. Just write.
Some people want to write big sophisticated sentences with long hard to pronounce, “advanced” words. What do you think when you read that writing? I think it’s hard to understand and boring. If it takes rereading the sentence 5 times to understand, I’m not going to enjoy it.
Write the way that makes you feel comfortable and that really screams you. When you develop your following of readers, you will all be glad you stayed true to your writing.
