Descriptive writing
It is very unlikely that anyone would enjoy an entire novel of dialogue. It would lack background, a scene, feeling, and physical descriptions. Think about other creative story mediums. If you listen to a story on the radio or read or watch a play, it is not simply talking but sounds and a narrator as well. With movies and television you get to see what’s going on.
Descriptive writing is a critical aspect of every type of writing. You need to be able to translate visual and emotional scenes and moments effectively in your writing.
If you are working on a piece of writing, a novel, short story, etc., stop every once in a while and examine your writing. If you are working on a project, you may decide to do it at the end of each writing session, chapter, or story. Examine critically each aspect of your writing, for now, focusing on your descriptive writing.
If you can’t find any descriptive writing, that is your first problem. At this point, start with some basics. Try to add in the emotions, thoughts, and feelings of our characters. Also, add to the background scenery. Your story needs to be set up, whether mostly in the beginning, or throughout. You might know your characters and setting inside and out, but you also need to let your readers know as well.
If you do find description in your writing, you are on track. Try to look at it from the reader’s point of view. Does it tell you everything you need to know? If it’s too hard to decide for yourself, ask a friend who is unfamiliar with your story to read it. Ask them if they feel lost or drawn in by your content.
If you are an avid reader, which you should be, you will know what to look for. Don’t assume you will have to change your whole writing style. If you are a great writer, chances are you are a great descriptive writer. Don’t think you need to be redundant and too extensive. Remember, quality not quantity. Too much extra description can make it boring so try to find a good middle ground.
If you find your description writing lacking, you should spend some time practicing. This would be a perfect opportunity to use your journal or writer’s notebook.
