Edit for your best work
Have you ever stumbled across a website, book, or newspaper article that had multiple spelling and grammar mistakes? It can be annoying and just ruin the article and writing experience.
Writing exceptional literature and poetry requires more than just a lack of spelling and grammar mistakes, but if you can understand how these problems can ruin a piece of writing, you can understand that other problems can do the same.
It is very important to edit your work. If you have written a novel, the worst thing you want to hear is that your story doesn’t hold up. Maybe you mention in the beginning that your main character is an only child, but suddenly has two siblings by the end. This is a minor mistake, but can easily be fixed by a little bit of editing.
For every piece of work you write, once you are finished, take some time off with it. Spend as much time as you can without looking at your work. You want to be able to be as critical as you can with your own writing and on a fresh mind.
A short story, essay, or short poem will be much easier to edit than a long novel, but that is to be assumed. I’m sure you knew from the start that a novel takes a lot of time and hard work.
When you are writing, you shouldn’t take the time to fix your mistakes. Now that you are editing, you should take all the time you need.
Fix everything that you don’t like. Change it five times if you have to. As you begin editing, you will start to see it really come together.
When you are finished, you will probably want to have someone you trust read it as well. Read it a final time before you send it out.
If you are just writing for the fun of it, you may not be so concerned with editing it perfectly. If you are serious about writing and you want to be published, be sure that you always create your best work. It can mean the difference between a published book or article, and another denying letter.
